Throughout the season, from April through October, the WWGA and the Woods Men’s Golf Association (WMGA) conduct weekend golf tournaments in a variety of formats. Typically, each month one tournament is for WWGA members only, one is a mixed tournament with the WMGA, and a third is for WMGA members only. Most tournaments are played on the Mountain View course, but some are on Stony Lick. Several tournaments are intentionally geared toward fun, while others are more competitive, such as the Club Championship.
Weekend tournaments are organized by Liz Shaw, our Tournament Chair, in conjunction with our Club Pro, Ron Springer. For these tournaments there is a USGA handicap index cap of 40.4, which equates to a Mountain View course handicap of 39. Anyone with a higher handicap may still play – and women often do, particularly when there is a scramble format.
About one month before each tournament, our Pro will send all members an email that describes the format and rules. It will also include a link for signing up. Just follow the instructions to sign up, and a confirmation email will follow.
Reminder emails will go out closer to the deadline for each event and include the list of who has already signed up. If you need to cancel after signing up, just call Ron Springer at 304-754-7222.
The entry fee for each tournament is $10, and there are optional buy-ins of $5 to enter the closest to the pin contest (on par 3s) and $5 for the 50/50 raffle that takes place after each event. All money is collected in the morning when you arrive to play. Normal cart fees also apply and are handled through the Pro Shop.
I encourage everyone to come out and enjoy weekend tournaments at The Woods. The scrambles are my personal favorite, as they are fun no matter what your handicap is. If you are new to golf, they are a great way to meet others -- so try it! A lot of us got started playing in tournaments through scrambles.
I hope to see you on the course!
